Germs are everywhere! These infamous, miniature organisms make us ill and feel miserable. Some illnesses can be serious for people with health issues, the elderly, and children. Therefore, the war against germs is important. Every flu season, daycares, office buildings, hospitals, schools, and families take measures to reduce the number of germs. However, germs have a major advantage because they are so tiny, we can’t see them with a naked eye. In addition, until those first sneezes, coughs, and spiking temperatures, we aren’t aware that germs have attacked our bodies.

There is no hiding from germs; they exist all over the world. Viruses, bacteria, and fungi are 3 major kinds of germs. When they invade our bodies, they make us feel horrible. For a person with a normally functioning immune system, it can take a few weeks to feel better.

What exactly are these tiny enemies? In order to face our foes, let’s get to know them first.

  • Viruses: Viruses don’t survive very long outside of a host. They grow and reproduce inside of us and make us sick. Some viruses cause the flu, the common cold, and chicken pox.
  • Bacteria: Not all bacteria are bad. However, others release toxins and make us sick. Some bacterial infections are strep throat, food poisoning, and staph infections.
  • Fungi: Fungi steal their nourishment from people, plants, or animals. They usually thrive in warm, damp areas. Fungi can cause athlete's foot and ring worm.

How do we get rid of germs? Here are 5 ways:

  1. High traffic areas: Focus on cleaning areas that get touched and used a lot. These areas collect a lot of germs. Some high traffic areas are door knobs, bathrooms, and sinks. In large buildings and facilities, this can be a large undertaking!
  2. Sanitize: Using a disinfectant, sanitize your building top to bottom. This is especially important during the winter months when the flu is rampant.
  3. Wash your hands: Remind everyone to wash their hands. Post signs, send staff memos, or invite a guest speaker to spread the message.
  4. Cover your nose & mouth: Along with spreading the “wash-your-hands” message, encourage everyone to cover their noses and mouths each time they sneeze and cough. This can help to stop the spread of germs. Make sure that soap and hand sanitizer are readily available.
  5. Hire a cleaning service: Life is so busy that we forget, or simply don’t have the time, to defend an entire building from the threat of germs. That is where a reputable cleaning company can help you keep the spread of germs under control. When you hire Green Up to Clean Up, you can rest assure that your building will be properly cleaned with Green Sealed cleaning solutions.
